English Translation of the Istikhara Dua
O Allah, I seek Your guidance (in making a choice) by Your knowledge, and I seek ability by Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, and I do not. You know, and I know not, and you are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter [mention the thing to be decided] is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, my worldly affairs, and in the hereafter, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if you know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, my worldly affairs, and in the hereafter, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me the good wherever it may be and make me content with it
How to Perform Istikhara According to Mufti Taqi Usmani
Mufti Usmani outlines a simple 5-step process:
Step 1: Pray Two Rakats (non-obligatory prayer)
Any time except prohibited hours.
Step 2: Recite the Dua of Istikhara
After completing the prayer, either immediately or shortly after.
Step 3: Mention the Matter
When saying “هذه الأمر” or “this matter,” silently mention your issue (e.g., job, proposal, etc.).
Step 4: Have Tawakkul (Trust)
Wait for Allah to create an easier option.
Step 5: Do NOT Wait for Dreams Only
Mufti Usmani clearly states that dreams are not a requirement. More critical is what unfolds:
“Aksar log Istikhara ke baad khwaab ka intezar karte hain. Yeh ghalat hai. Dalail aur dil ka itminan ziada ahmiyat rakhta hai.”

| You must repeat it 7 times | No such requirement in Sunnah |
| It’s only for marriage | It’s for all important life decisions |
When and How Often to Perform It?
- Mufti Usmani recommends praying once, but notes that if a person remains uncertain, repeating the prayer for 2–3 nights is acceptable.
- It’s best done at night (but not mandatory).
