How to Perform Istikhara Dua: A Step-by-Step Guide
What is istikhara dua?
Istikhara means “seeking the best” or “seeking goodness.” It is a way of seeking guidance from Allah when making important decisions.
Through the two rak’ahs of prayer, muslims ask Allah to guide them toward the best decision and help them to choose what’s best for their life and future.
The Messenger of Allah(PBUH) used to teach his companions to make istikhara in every matter. And he said: If any of you is concerned about a decision he has to make, let him pray two rak’ah of istikhara prayer.
When to pray istikhara?
You can perform istikhara at any time of the day or night, except during the prohibited times for salah, such as after Fajr and Asr. It’s better to approach istikhara with a calm mind and honest intentions, trusting Allah’s wisdom to guide you.
How to pray istikhara?
To perform istikhara, prepare yourself by performing wudu (ablution) and ensure you are in a quiet and clean place.
The quick step of performing istikhara is given below:
The first step is to stand facing the Qibla with your feet shoulder-width apart.
Make a sincere intention (Niyyah) in your heart, seeking Allah’s guidance for the special decision you want to make.
Start by saying(ّٰاللّٰہُ أَکْبَر) “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is the greatest)and raise your hands, placing your right hand over your left above your chest.
Recite Surah Al-Fatiha (the introduction of the quran), followed by the second surah or at least three verses of the Quran.
Perform bow (Rukoo)by saying (اللّٰہُ أَکْبَر) “Allahu Akbar” and place your hands on your knees and say (سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ)“Subhana Rabbiy-al-Adheem” (Glory be to my Lord Almighty) at least three times.
Now rise and say (سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ) Sami Allahu liman hamidah(Allah hears those who praise Him), followed by (رَبَّنَا لَكَ الْحَمْدُ) “Rabbana lakal hamd” (O our Lord, to You is the praise).
Prostrate (sujood)by saying( اللّٰہُ أَکْبَر)“Allahu Akbar” on your forehead, nose, palms, and toes on the ground.
Three times should be said(سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى) “Subhaana Rabbiy-al-A’laa” (Glory is to my Lord, the Most High).
Sit briefly, repeat sujood, and finish the two rak’ahs.
After completing two rak’ahs, recite Tashahhud(ٱلتَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَٱلصَّلَوَاتُ وَٱلطَّيِّبَاتُ، ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَىٰ عِبَادِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُه)”At-tahiyyatu lillah, was-salawaatu wat-tayyibaat. As-salaamu ’alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmat-Ullahi wa barakaatu. As-salaamu ’alayna, wa ’alaa ‘ibaadi-llahis saaliheen. Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah wa ashhadu anna muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluhu is arbiii”.
Send salawat upon Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) by reciting (اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ)”“Allahumma Salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala aali Muhammadin, kama sallaita ‘ala Ibrahima wa ‘ala aali Ibrahima innaka Hamidum-Majeed. Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala aali Muhammadin kama barakta ‘ala Ibrahima wa ‘ala aali Ibrahima innaka Hameedum-Majeed”
Now say some sunnah’s du’as at this point before concluding and turning your head to the right, left with (ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللّٰهِ)” Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah is ki arbi” each time.
Once the salah is complete, recite the istikhara dua, which is given below, with complete understanding and concentration, and ask Allah to guide you toward the best decision.

Istikhara dua in English:
“O Allah, I seek Your guidance [in making a choice] by Your knowledge, and I seek ability by Your power, and I ask You from Your immense favour. For indeed, You are able while I am not, and You know while I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen.
O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy, and bless it for me.
And if you know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affair, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.”
Common myths about istikhara
Dream interpretation
After performing istikhara, dreams are not necessarily a definitive sign of guidance. Many cultures have linked dreams with answers, and according to the Sunnah, there are three types of dreams in istikhara. The first is “Dream from Allah,” where we get divine guidance and a clear answer. The second is “Dream from the nafs. “These dreams reflect a person’s desires, thoughts, and worries. The third is” Dream from Shaytan,” where Shaytan creates confusion and distracts the person from the right path.
The answer to istikhara may not be instant. Patience and belief in Allah are essential. Istikhara is a personal prayer; the individual should perform the actual istikhara.
